If a show is dark, funny, subversive, and controversial, you know its on HBO or SHOWTIME, the only channels bold enough to have produced shows that network TV would run away from. Weeds is exactly one of those shows. A comedy about a young suburbanite mother with two kids who turns to dealing pot after her husband dies, Weeds flies directly in the face of the conventional comedy. That’s what makes it such a good show. Weeds has already been picked up for a second season, so this show will be around for a while!

Nancy Botwin (Golden Globe winner Mary-Louise Parker) has a normal life as a housewife in the LA suburb of Agrestic. She has a nice husband and two wonderful kids and a slacker brother-in-law named Andy(Justin Kirk). When her husband dies suddenly, Nancy needs a way to come up with a steady income so she can support her family. So she turns to dealing pot, and becomes the pied piper to the pot smoking denizens of Agrestic, including her accountant, Doug Wilson (Kevin Nealon). So how can you be a full time dealer and mother without getting busted, without your brother-in-law horning in on the action, and how can you lecture your kids when you break the law to support them? This show explores the humor in these predicaments as well as the drama in the 10-episode First Season.

The acting in Weeds is superb. Parker was wonderful in West Wing and is even better here, and Elizabeth Perkins makes a great comeback with her role as Nancy’s frenemy Celia Hodes. Kevin Nealon is hysterical as Doug, reminding people how good a comedian he really is when not starring in bad material. Like other Showtime hits, this show not only explores Nancy’s life and loves, but develops dramatic arcs for the lives of the other main characters, giving the show much more depth and range.

The complete first season on 2 discs contains all 10 first season episodes with a run time of 283 minutes. There are 6 cast and crew commentaries, and several featurettes including “Smoky Snippets” and “Smoke and Mirrors: Original Marijuana Mockumentary.” It is in 2.0 and 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio. Check out their website for more info. Reeommended.

The pilot opens almost mid-story it seems, acclimating you to the characters and their interpersonal dysfunctions subtlety and sparingly. The richness and vibrancy of the characters makes it “ok” that you don’t get all the nitty-gritty details of why and when and how things started- you feel as if you know these people and will continue to learn about their why’s, when’s and how’s as the “plot thickens” in season 2.

A fascinating exploration of suburban life- so common, easily identified with and yet totally beneath the surface. Of course it is dramatized, but after living in OC for over 10 years I can testify to the validity. The premise of this show is a terrific commentary on what suburbia has done to humanity as people try to make sure that all their “Little Boxes” stay the same. Our HOA recently sent letters to residents who were unfortunate enough to have brown spots in their lawns. I live in the desert and it’s been unseasonably hot across the nation- but the semblance of normalcy must be protected in suburbia. They may want to worry about the growth patterns of a different type of grass in our quiet little neighborhood.

I admire the main character, Nancy, who judges none and accepts tragedy and criticism both with grace and dignity. When a fellow mom and friend attacks her parenting by citing a book on parenting she is not baited by the comment, but retorts with an amusing grin and wryly delivered, “Wow, Celia. (effective pause) I didn’t know you read books.” The timing and rapport between these two characters is pure magic-the steel magnolias of the “soccer mom” set.

She is a real person in a real world, as plastic as it may seem- and she makes irrational, emotional decisions; she acts impulsively and impetuously, balanced with a carefully controlled, tender-hearted, frailty which makes her all the more likable. She displays the civility so rarely seen in our barely civilized civilization, while weathering the social slings of the socialites in her society.

The supporting cast of characters provide a rich and intricate skein to weave throughout the threads of storyline, some are a skosh stereotypical but in a way that works- making them familiar. Like real people we know, all of Nancy’s “people” are imperfect and interesting - making it easier to connect the dots between the (probably purposely) missing why’s, when’s and how’s.

A must see for the open minded. Plus the special features are more interesting than most TV series’ DVDs.

First let me make something clear: in order to like this series, there are a few things you have to accept. Such as, teenage boys have eyes, and find girls physically attractive. And, that this story pretty obviously must have grown out of the memory of a high school boy fantasizing about his teacher. And, Japanese writers sometimes are a little unrealistic with initial story setup, so just grit your teeth if the part where they get married seems a little contrived. It’s the rest of the story you want to see.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Please Teacher! - Anime Legends Complete Collection! Click Here

If you can get past these, you are going to experience one of the sweeter, and better written, love stories you will ever come across. It starts out a romantic comedy, pretty standard “magical girlfriend” fare along the same lines as “Oh, My Goddess” , and just as you are getting used to that, a much more complex and mature tale sneaks up from behind you and grabs hold.

A couple notes: I am a parent, and became interested in Anime again from watching DVDs first before deciding whether my children should watch them. I am not uptight about occasional nudity (a la Ranma 1/2) or “suggested” sex, but I do try to keep them away from situations where the sexual content is clear, or is central to understanding the story. For this reason, two warnings:

1) If you are more restrictive than I describe, you probably don’t want your kids to see this.

2) In any case, don’t let your younger kids watch the last episode. It is actually an “add-on” OAV that wasn’t part of the original TV series, and it isn’t necessary for getting plot resolution. At one point, a high-school couple are clearly having a romantic get-away in a “love hotel”, and another couple are clearly in a “bondage, S&M” situation, and another couple are clearly in a situation that would be statutory rape in the U.S. A little too much information for pre-high-school children, even in my liberal opinion.

I’ve long held the opinion that no matter what sort of film or television shows you enjoy, there is an anime out there for you. This is one of those series that proves my point. I am far from being a fan of typical romantic comedy fare as that particular genre of entertainment is beyond stale and redundant here in America, but I have found that anime has so much more to offer than just sex, violence, fantastic sci-fi, and over-the-top slapstick humor. There are some damn fine, truly romantic and touching stories in the anime genre, and this is one of them. While “Love Hina” and other romantic-comedy anime series’ have tempered their softer side with outrageous humor and outlandish characters to make their stories more, well, more anime-ish, “Please Teacher” shows remarkable restraint and -in spite of the teacher from outer space angle- keeps the sci-fi very light, the humor low-key and character-based, and takes a subtler approach to most of the characters that really helps to bring each of them to life. The engrossing story features many plot twists that you would never expect since so many series are content to run in place for fear of upsetting their fanbases *cough*RanmaInuyasha*cough*. One of the aspects of this series that really adds depth to the plot is the main character’s unique “disease”. When Kei becomes sad, he enters a comatose state of suspended animation -sometimes for years at a time- where he goes into his own mind to escape from the sadness he finds in his life. Through his experiences with his friends and, of course, his new teacher who through a bizarre set of circumstances he’s forced to “marry” (Ms. Kazami, possibly the most charming anime girl ever) he learns that there is no happiness without sadness for contrast, and that even if he stands still the universe will keep moving without him. These sorts of ideas and the way they are presented as integral parts of the story are what separate true classics from the throwaway entertainment crop. It also doesn’t hurt that the characters in the story are truly likeable. Ms. Kazami’s trademark phrase is hardly catchy (”This is priority one”) but her delivery of the line (in Japanese, anyways) makes it a pleasure to hear over and over, and don’t get me started on her chocolate candystick habit. These sorts of minor nuances make the difference between the characters you enjoy and the characters you truly feel for. The series ran for a far-too-short 12 episodes, but we are treated to a joyous epilogue that turns out to be the funniest episode of the whole series and really left me feeling happy that I’d given this show a try. If you enjoyed “Love Hina”, “Ah! My Goddess”, or “Chobits”, if you are looking for an anime that’s both inspirational and humorous, if you’ve seen enough of the giant robots, killer ninjas, and obnoxious slapstick humor that pervades more typical anime, or if you just want to enjoy a sweet, romantic story with some feeling and depth, then this is exactly what you are looking for.

First, let’s clear up one fact, this is NOT Claymation. It is STOP MOTION animation. Claymation has figures made of clay that are filmed one frame at a time. Stop motion has 3 dimentional puppets that are animated one frame at a time like the Ray Harryhousen figures in King Kong, Jason and the Argonaughts etc. There is a vast differance in the techniques.

This fact aside, “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” is the very best of the wonderful Rankin/Bass specials. The designer for the series of holiday specials, Paul Coker, has done an exceptional job with these delightful wooden and plastic creations. We see Kris Kringle develope from a foundling baby to the Santa figure so well known today. Each stage of his development is wonderful. But then, each of the characters is designed and executed perfectly. Watch the delightful changes of the Winter Worlock from mean and evil to mellow and fun.

All the animation is smooth and precise giving the excellent illusion that these figures are actually alive.

The songs are excellent, from the familiar “Santa Claus is Coming To Town” to the lovely “My World Is Beginning Today” sung by Jessica, the future Mrs. Santa. (For some strange reason, this delightful song is often cut when this production is shown on TV, luckily it is included in the tape.)

The script couldn’t be better giving explanations for most of the Santa legends such as how he got his name, how reindeer can fly, why he comes down chimneys and fills stockings. It can make a believer out of even Ebenezer Scrooge.

This has been my absolute favorite Christmas video since I first saw it many years ago on TV. It was one of the reasons I bought my first VCR so I could make a tape of it before it was commercially available. I even have an old LP recording of the complete show. So, do I recommend it, the answer is a resounding YES!!!!!

“Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” (Rankin/Bass Productions, 1970) is a true Christmas classic. A quintessential “animagic” or “clay-mation” production, it features the talents of Fred Astaire (who narrates the story as postman Special Delivery Kluger), Mickey Rooney (Kris Kringle), Keenan Wynn (Winter Warlock), and Paul Frees (Burgermeister Meisterburger). Frees is absolutely brilliant as the voice of the Burgermeister of the village of Sombertown, which presumably is in Scandinavia. In brief, the film explains the origins of various aspects of the legend of Santa Claus through an original story. People of all ages will enjoy “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town.” Children will love the animation and the story. The rest of us appreciate that as well as the hilarious moments when Kris Kringle expresses surprise (watch his eyes swell to giant coal-black circles!). For anyone who grew up in the 1970s or 1980s, this is a gem of the pop culture of our time. It’s highly recommended for anyone who has enjoyed other Rankin/Bass classics such as “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “The Little Drummer Boy.”

“North & South” alone is reason enough to buy this dvd collection. This coupled with two other period drama powerhouses “Wives & Daughters” and “Cranford” makes this a collection that any period drama/classics/romance fan should be without. These dramas by author Elizabeth Gaskell represent the finest that BBC drama has to offer.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Elizabeth Gaskell Collection! Click Here

** “North & South” is the spectacular adaptation of the novel that centers on John Thornton (who represents the industrial north) and Margaret Hale (who represents the idyllic, agricultural south). Theirs is a war of words, cultures and personalities as Margaret Hale (Daniela Denby Ashe) and her family struggle to adapt to life in the dirty, noisy, mill town of Milton after a carefree, comfortable life in the southern town of Helstone. There her family meets manufacturer John Thornton (played by the unforgettable Richard Armitage) and his family and it is dislike-at-first-sight for Margaret. She finds Mr. Thornton a rough, proud and haughty man who treats his employees with disdain. Mr. Thornton, however, is instantly smitten with the outspoken and fearless Margaret. But as Margaret gradually learns to appreciate Mr. Thornton, events take place that threaten to divide them from each other forever.

** “Wives and Daughters” is the story of young Molly Gibson (Justine Waddell) and her widowed father (Bill Paterson). Molly lives a carefree life, until her father remarries and brings home his new wife, Hyacinth (Francesca Annis). She and her lovely daughter Cynthia (Keeley Hawes) bring change and sometimes chaos to the Gibson’s lives and Molly finds herself in competition with Cynthia for the affections of Roger Hamley (Anthony Howell), the son of the local squire (Michael Gambon). We soon find that all is not as it seems and long-kept secrets are unearthed which threaten the love lives and reputations of both Molly and Cynthia.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Elizabeth Gaskell Collection! Click Here

** The splendid “Cranford” starring a bevy of British acting greats led by Judi Dench, Michael Gambon, Eileen Atkins, Francesca Annis and Imelda Staunton. The story centers around the locals in the sleepy town of Cranford, where everyone makes it their business to know everything about their neighbors. Their lives are turned topsy turvy when a handsome young doctor (Simon Woods) with new ideas arrives and rumors of the railroad threaten to destroy their idyllic town. This is truly an ensemble cast, as all stories intermingle and each character makes an impact of the lives of others in the town. Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins play the Jenkyns sisters; Lisa Dillon play their cousin Mary Smith; Deborah Findlay and Selena Griffiths play the Tomkinson sisters; Imelda Staunton is the quirky and nosy Miss Pole; Barbara Flynn is the elegant Mrs. Jamieson; Julia Sawalha is the quiet spinster Jessie Brown and Jim Carter is her outspoken father; Francesca Annis plays the haughty and aristocratic Lady Ludlow; Greg Wise plays her cousin Sir Charles Maulver; Phillip Glenister plays Lady Ludlow’s land agent, Mr. Carter; and Alex Etel is a young man that Mr. Carter takes on.

What sets these apart from other costume dramas is the consistency of the acting, the high production values, the compelling stories, and memorable characters. I dare you not to feel John Thornton’s pain as he says “Look back at me” as he watches Margaret climb up the carriage on her way back to London, or Harry Gregson’s pain as he says goodbye to a beloved mentor, or the thrill as Roger Hamley sees Molly’s transformation at the Cumnor’s ball. These are wonderful stories that you will want to watch over and over, which make this dvd collection an absolute gem.

I had heard a little about Elizabeth Gaskell before. I knew that she had written the biography of Charlotte Bronte but that is all I knew about her. I had never read any of Mrs. Gaskell’s books myself. Recently, I saw Cranford on PBS and decided to purchase the DVD of it. When I saw that Amazon offered a collection of three of Mrs. Gaskell’s stories, I decided to buy the whole collection. I must say, I LOVE all three of these stories and I have come to appreciate Mrs. Gaskell as a writer, even more. If you are a Jane Austen fan, you will enjoy Cranford, Wives & Daughters and North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell, too.

This is one of those rare occaisions where a sequel actually holds up to the original, and where it can’t be a hit every time, understood, too many times the sequels only cash in on the original’s success.

Where the first installment in this series tells a story, with some very dark visuals, this one focuses, and relies heavily on nightmarish imagery. Yes, there is a story, and it picks up right where the first one left off, but this installment seems to want mostly to throw a whole lot of bizarre and scary images at you. I have stated elsewhere, I don’t enjoy gore for gore’s sake, but where it’s warranted, why not do it right? There is a segment early on, which is SO horrible to watch, so controversial, so gratuitous, I get uneasy when it’s on. This, of course, is the mental patient who is wearing the straight-jacket. The intent, obviously, is to upset and unbalance the viewer, and it does so, in spades. You gotta feel for this guy, even knowing it’s just a movie.

A large part of the film takes place in another realm, and it flows like a fantasy film, which is, in its own way, what it is. This takes the edge off, because this, and the first installment, have some intense graphic violence. There is something in people, they have a morbid fascination with seeing pain and suffering. And where films like this aren’t mainstream, they have a very loyal following nonetheless.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hellbound: Hellraiser II - 20th Anniversary Edition! Click Here

An enjoyable feature, for me, anyway, is the extras. There is a plethora of interviews with the people involved in the making; the director of this, and the first one, some of the actors, and various people who made it what it is. But, to its detriment, this takes the covers off, and the movie no longer has its aura of mystery. One of the fun things about watching a wierd movie, is thinking, “…how did they do that?…” Of course, it’s nice to have the answer at your disposal, but looking behind the curtain, it’s often disappointing to see the little, unassuming man pulling the levers.

The first two are the only ones in this series I bother with, as I saw and didn’t like the third, or fourth. I have seen little clips of the others, and as can be expected, they drove it into the ground.

“What’s your pleasure, sir?”

A year after the first movie, Kirsty (Ashley Lawrence) has been sent to a insitute after no one believed that creatures killed her family. However there is a preety girl patient named Tiffany (Inogen Boorman) who is good at solving puzzles and is a favorite patient of Dr. Channard (Kennth Cranham) whom has been obsessed with searching for a key to another dimension. He finds the bloody mattress where Julia (Clare Higgins) died then resurrects her to help Dr. Channard to summon the forces of evil, the Cenobites lead by Pinhead (Doug Bradley) have returned very unhappy as they seek revenge and now Kirsty is the only one that can end the demons even if she has to literally go to hell.

A brilliant and macabre sequel to the 1987 classic horror-fantasy from Clive Barker! Tony Randall whom made his debut of directing does a fantastic job and Clive Barker who is the creator of “Hellraiser” serves as excutive producer. Here is a sequel that delivers the goods in terms of atmosphere, story and graphic torture and gore sequences! in fact the film is so gory that it nearly got an “X” rating but got an R as it was cut then later finally uncut with all the graphic footage on video in 1989 in a unrated version. The film offers plot twists and really cool creatures with nice effects for it’s time especially the origin of everyone’s favorite nail-headed demon Pinhead, the music score by Christopher Young is chilling as always and the film is a satisyfing follow-up to a masterpiece that delivers.

This DVD contains a great remastered version of the unrated director’s cut with great picture and sound with cool extras like interviews, audio commentary, four new featurettes, “Lost in the Labyrinth” Documentary which is an original documentary on “Hellbound: Hellraiser 2″, Trailers and TV Spots and poster & Still gallery.

Many of the newer Sesame Street videos, particularly if they feature the “little red menace” are watered-down and icky sweet. This one actually scared my toddler a little bit at the beginning - but engaged him enough to keep him watching until he wasn’t scared any more - EXACTLY what you want it to do!

Toddlers have lots of fears - especially around halloween - and this video is a good way to show them that being scared can be fun! It’s filled with knock-knock jokes, bad puns, and spooky talking skeletons, ghosts, and more fun props. I love that they didn’t get rid of the thunder, lightning, or any other “scary” stuff in the Count’s castle. There’s also a lot of muppet-kid interaction where everyone gets silly.

I highly recommend this video to anyone who’s got a shy toddler!

My daughter is 11 months and about the only things she watches are Elmo and Barney (and we don’t let her watch a lot of either because we want her to do other things while we still have some input). Her favorite tapes/dvds are The Best of Elmo, Elmo Says Boo, and Kids Favorite Songs II in the Sesame Street/Elmo series. She gets bored with Elmo’s World series as it gets a little too serious for her and she seems to get bored. This tape is great and she doesn’t seem to get scared at all. Maybe that will come later, but I don’t see how a kid could really get scared at this tape. It’s a stitch to me, but I’m not 2 either.

You may not immediately spot the leprechauns, wizards, and other tell-tale signs, but as you watch `Waking Ned Devine’, you will soon realize that what you are seeing is an Irish fairy tale, simple and pure. The signs are all there, and if you are sharp, you will soon start to catch them. First to make its appearance is the pot of gold, disguised as a winning lottery ticket held by some lucky neighbor in the tiny village of Tulaigh Morh. Next, you will discover that the two old men scheming for a piece of the action, blarney filled Jackie O’Shea (Ian Bannen) and his expressive faced scarecrow pal Michael O’Sullivan (David Kelly), are but thinly disguised mischievous leprechauns. You will meet a hog keeper (James Nesbitt) waiting for the kiss of a fair maid (Susan Lynch) to reveal him for the prince that he is, and an old hag so black hearted and malevolent that all know her as a witch. And when Ned Devine, the neighbor with the winning ticket, dies from the shock of it, his ghost appears to old Jackie in a dream, setting in motion a plan fanciful as any Puss in Boots ever dreamed of that has the whole village working to outwit the vigilance of the lottery board and the malevolence of the witch, to all claim a piece of the fortune at rainbow’s end.

`Waking Ned Devine’ will enchant you and make you laugh. From its opening scene until the last verse of The Parting Glass is sung, it will charm you and leave you with a smile, wanting to watch it again.

Theo Logos

I first saw Waking Ned Devine in the movie theater. I quite enjoyed it at the time but had not seen it again until just this weekend.

In contrast to essentially ALL comedies I have seen in recent years, this one holds up wonderfully to repeated viewing. It was even better than the first time. Every part, from the stars O’Bannon and Kelly to the smallest walk-ons, is wonderfuly acted. I particularly liked the old sourpuss who rode the motorized cart, the pig farmer, and the young priest. They are all so multidimensional that you can imagine what they are doing when they aren’t on screen.

The screenplay is wonderful, and the direction is expert. I especially liked the love scenes between Maggie and the pig farmer who smells so bad that she has to stay yards away from him at all times. Imagine an affecting, humorous, and believable love scene where the participants don’t even touch each other!

Another plus is that this is actually a great family movie. Although it is in no way designed for kids, my 8-year-old laughed all the way through it. He especially liked the famous naked motorcycle ride!

Definitely worth owning (not just renting)!

I watched it once, and the let my teen watch it with me the second time. It has a ‘Into the Wild” movie flavor to it.

I am not Canadian, nor is my store in Canada, but I still thought this was a great Canadian travel film. This was one of the more realistic cancer films I have seen in a bit, and (I feel) not worthy of the hate club that campaigns against it.

Simply put, it is a film about a man who travels across his country after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. Like other good travel films, we see a sampling of the beautiful country that Canada has to offer, we encounter every-day personalities of people along the way and we learn a few lessons about ourselves and what life might be about. The difference here is that we get a insightful narration by Campbell Scott (most recognized of late with his role in Phoebe in Wonderland), which in itself provided some nice laugh-out-loud moments.

Buy,Download, Or Stream One Week! Click Here

I laughed at unexpected moments, saw some incredible Canadian scenery, and did not feel anything was contrived or cardboard (as most complainants have stipulated). The special features give this four-star film a five. The low-def “Making-of” contained just the right amount of logistical material on production, the commentary and interviews provide plenty of information for the followers and the remaining HD gallery, after party and trailer add just the right amount of extras to show the fun side of this film.

The Blu quality is slightly better than the DVD, but there is still plenty of grain and and (very minute) random artifact. The grandiose panoramas could have been a bit clearer, the DTS was never fully utilized, even with the plethora of songs, but the presentation was still adequate. Not a reference Blu, but the film and special features make this a higher rating.

Not expecting much from this based upon the previews, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by “Laws of Attraction,” which is at its best when stars Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore manage to flirt and argue at the same time.

Moore, who’s luminous, is particularly good in this movie. She plays Audrey, a top divorce attorney who manages to appear by-the-book even when she’s completely insecure. With her hair in a tight bun and her perfect, subtle suit, she’s putting on a front, and Moore milks this for every funny moment she can get.

Brosnan, playing her rumpled rival attorney Daniel, oozes sexiness, as well, by getting Audrey to love him by completely annoying her and catching her off-guard. He understands that the only way this woman will accept love is if it completely blindsides her, and he takes steps to do just that.

The supporting cast, particularly Frances Fisher as Audrey’s plastic surgery-enhanced mother, is really strong, though I feel better use could’ve been made of Parker Posey, who has some funny lines in this but has been much, much better elsewhere.

As an homage to the Hepburn-Tracy movies, “Laws of Attraction” falls short. Building momentum through the chief characters’ rivalry/romance, it sorta derails when the plot moves the action to Ireland instead of New York. This is a shame.

Because, when it works, “Laws of Attraction” is really charming.

Unlike many others, I really enjoyed this quirky movie. Julianne Moore is the perfect choice to play the compulsive anal-retentive divorce attorney. Her mannerisms and body language fit so well with the character. Pierce Brosnan is always a great choice for a romantic lead, and this film was a good fit for him. Pierce and Julianne had real chemistry, and their on screen presence together was heart warming. Even though this is a classified as a comedy, I liked the combination of drama and comedy.

This is a delightful film. The Broadway score, already one of the finer scores for its time, with the classics “Taking a chance on love” and “Cabin in the sky”, was further improved with the addition of “Happiness is just a thing called Joe”. There are several other wonderful numbers, including the Duke Ellington number with some great dancing, and “Bubbles” singing “Shine”. The cast was the finest black talent of the day, and the movie demonstrates why Ethel Waters was considered the greatest singer and entertainer of her day. In this movie, she also demonstrates that she is a fine actress and a fine dancer. It’s a pity that the racial climate of the time didn’t allow her more films - she’s as magical on screen as she was, by all reports, in person. The remainder of the cast includes a stunning young Lena Horne, surely one of the most beautiful women ever to appear on screen, and who is here allowed to be smolderingly sexy, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, who’s an endearing Little Joe, Rex Ingram as Lucifer Jr, and smaller but memorable appearances by Louis Armstrong, Butterfly McQueen, and “Bubbles” of Buck and Bubbles. Seeing Waters sing “Taking a chance on love”, “cabin in the sky”, “Happiness is just a thing called Joe” and her wicked reprise of “Honey in the honeycomb”, complete with some dance steps that will floor you, is more than enough to recommend the movie, but all performances are delightful, and the songs and background music are great. If we take it as a “fable”, as we are counseled to do at the beginning, then I don’t see it as a racist or dated film. The characters are almost all well delineated and believable within the “fable” context, and are no more stereotypical in this context than numerous films of white people at the time that were also fantasies.

It’s a pleasure to watch from beginning to end - clearly a timeless classic, especially valuable for archiving for all time the classic Waters performance and the superb acting, singing, dancing and comedic skills of some of the greatest black talent pre-World War II.

Ethel Waters repeated her Broadway role of Petunia Jackson, a woman who fervently prays for her husband to mend his gambling ways for the screen with great success, as she sings and dances her way into our hearts. Petunia is the central character in the film, and has most of the songs. The film was also instrumental in making Lena Horne a star, and even though her part as the devil’s handmaiden, Georgia Brown, is not a large one, she is stunning, and makes the screen sizzle with her sensual beauty.

Petunia’s husband, Little Joe, is played by Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, and Little Joe’s soul is in the balance, as Lucifer Jr. (Rex Ingram) battles The General (Kenneth Spencer) for where it will spend eternity. The scenes with Lucifer and his minions, who include Louis Armstrong, are hilarious, as they plot the best way to tempt Little Joe. The talent, music, and humor in this film make it well worth watching as entertainment, and also for its historical value of being one of the best all-black cast vehicles Hollywood produced.

“Cabin in the Sky” was the directorial film debut for Vincente Minnelli (he had directed the Broadway show), and some others in the terrific cast are John William Sublett, Butterfly McQueen, and Duke Ellington and his Orchestra. Music is by Harold Arlen, E.Y. Harburg, and more. The song list is: “Cabin in the Sky,” “Happiness is Just a Thing Called Joe” (nominated for a Best Song Oscar), “Taking a Chance on Love,” “Life is Full of Consequence,” “Li’l Black Sheep,” “Shine,” and “Honey in the Honeycomb.” Total running time is 98 minutes.
